Experience science in the Urban Club P41

The Münster University of Applied Sciences (FH Münster), together with the University of Münster (WWU), and the city of Münster organised the Münster Science Store – a shop premises in the city center. During a week fully packed with talks and demonstrations, a number of activities around the fields of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths) could be experienced by the public.

As part of the program, Prof. Felix Beck gave a workshop on the topic of the Zoetrope (Greek for Wheel of Life).
A Zoetrope is a mechanical machine which holds a paper strip with a sequence of images at the inside of a cylinder. One can rotate the cylindric body and look through cut outs, each one located on the opposite side of the images. Through the stroboscopic effect the images appear as a continuous looping movie sequence.

The participants learned about the principles of this early cinematic machine. Furthermore they drew their own short animated film sequences. Beck additionally explained that the A – for Arts – should always be added to the STEM fields. STEM alone is not enough to solve the world’s problems. What we need is STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, ARTS and Maths)!
